Rhinoplasty: What is it, and Why Rhino?
Well, in answer to the second question, the root word 'rhino' is all about the nose, and so are the heavily-horned rhinoceros.
A rhinoplasty surgeon may work from his or her own office or special outpatient surgery center, or perhaps from a hospital, however this is not a hugely complex procedure, and rarely (though it does occasionally happen) do patients have such complex operations done that more than a one day hospital stay is required. Depending on the complexity of the operation, the doctor may decide to simply give the patient local anesthesia to numb the area just around the nose, which would mean that the patient is actually awake throughout the entire time but has no sensation of pain during the operation. The other option, for more involved jobs, is to put the patient under general anesthesia, so that the patient is asleep during the duration of the procedure. Either way, it's usually a fairly simple procedure.
There are many advantages to changing the appearance of your nose with nasal surgery, as it is a major focal point of the face. It can help improve your self-esteem, and correct damage done by a broken nose or other injury to the face. Don't have unrealistic expectations of what the surgeon can do, because the surgeon must work within the parameters of your other features but don't underestimate the power of a small change to your nose on you total appearance and self image.
Rhinoplasty operations aren't for everyone, especially if you're a growing adolescent. That is the time when most plastic surgeons are more hesitant to perform such operations, especially for purely aesthetic purposes, as the patient is going through a time of extremely rapid growth which can result in undesirable reactions in conjunction with the operation. However, rhinoplasty can be used to correct breathing problems and other medical conditions, in which case the doctors and/or surgeons often simply can't wait for the patient to stop growing to perform the surgical procedure. Talk to your doctor to decide if and when you should have rhinoplasty done for you.
