The nose may be the most important feature on the face. An appropriate nose balances and harmonizes all of the other features on the face. It often
amazes me how much different the eyes, lips, and skin looks once the nose has been changed. A nose that is too large, long, wide, or round does not
allow the other features on the face to shine. By changing the shape of the nose- sometimes subtly, sometimes dramatically- the entire appearance of
the face is improved.
Of equal importance however, is the fact that the nose also adds some uniqueness to your appearance. In part, it is what makes you…well…you. This cannot
be forgotten when we are doing nasal surgery. There have been many unhappy post-rhinoplasty patients who have a nose that would look great- if it were on
someone else’s face. We have to be absolutely sure that the end result fits that person’s face.
We also have to be sure that the nose not only looks great, but also works well. Again, I have seen many unhappy patients whose attractive nose is so stuffy
that they are miserable. Breathing well and smelling normally are also important features of a well-done rhinoplasty.
Most of the surgery is accomplished inside the nose. Occasionally a very small incision across the bottom of the nose is needed. Also, if the nostrils need
to be narrowed there may be incisions at the nostril edges. All outside incisions heal beautifully and are virtually invisible in a short period of time.
